Why Students Remember Their Teachers Long After They’ve Forgotten the Lesson

Close your eyes for thirty seconds. 

Think of your favourite teacher. 

Not the one who gave the highest marks. 

Not the one who finished every chapter on time. 

The one you still remember. 

Can you picture them? 

Now ask yourself one question. 

What came to mind first? 

Was it a lesson they taught? 

A worksheet? 

A presentation? 

A test? 

Probably not. 

More often than not, what we remember is something much quieter. The teacher who smiled at us 

when we doubted ourselves. The one who waited patiently while everyone else had finished. The one 

who noticed when we weren’t ourselves. The one who believed in us long before we believed in 

ourselves. That is perhaps the simplest answer to why students remember their teachers.  

As educators, we spend countless hours refining lesson plans, preparing assessments, choosing 

resources and searching for better teaching strategies. All of that matters. Good teaching deserves 

thoughtful planning. But somewhere in the middle of curriculum documents, learning outcomes and 

assessment rubrics, we sometimes forget the one thing that gives all of it meaning. Relationships !! 

The curriculum may tell us what to teach. Pedagogy helps us decide how to teach. But relationships 

determine whether learning is truly received. 

This isn’t simply a comforting idea. It is what decades of educational research continue to affirm. 

The importance of teacher-student relationships extends far beyond creating happy classrooms. Strong 

relationships influence children’s willingness to participate, their confidence to take risks, their 

resilience after making mistakes and, ultimately, their capacity to learn. 

Think about a young child walking into school on the first day. Long before they notice the books on 

the shelves or the colourful displays on the walls, they begin asking silent questions. 

“Should I say what I feel like?” 

“Are they my friends?” 

“Will this teacher like me?” 

Children rarely ask these questions aloud, but they answer them every single day through their 

experiences.  

A warm greeting at the classroom door. A teacher who remembers their favourite story or a song and 

even a holiday destination. A reassuring smile after an incorrect answer.A quiet conversation when 

something feels difficult. 

These moments may seem small to adults. To children, they become evidence. Evidence that this is a 

place where they can try. A place where mistakes are allowed. A place where learning feels possible, 

learning feels fulfilling. 

As an early childhood educator, I have often been reminded that before children become confident 

learners, they first become confident belongers. They don’t arrive in our classrooms ready to absorb 

literacy, mathematics or science. They arrive looking for connection. Once they find it, curiosity 

follows almost naturally. Perhaps that is why, years later, very few adults remember Tuesday’s lesson 

on fractions or the worksheet they completed before lunch. Yet they can describe, with astonishing 

clarity, the teacher who made them feel seen. 

And that tells us something profound about learning itself. 

Before children remember the lesson, they decide whether they can trust the person teaching it.

The honesty with which teachers sat with ideas that challenged years of conditioning and familiar practice.
I had gone there to facilitate a session on student agency, voice, choice, ownership, and independence — the kind of educational vocabulary we often hear in workshops and conferences.
But somewhere during that day, the conversation became far more human than professional.
Because real change in education rarely begins with frameworks or beautifully written policies.
It begins in ordinary classroom moments.
Not in mission statements displayed neatly across school corridors.
But in tiny moments between a teacher and a child.
A child saying softly,
“Can I try it my way?”
And a teacher pausing long enough to say,
“Yes.”
The more I reflected after the workshop, the more I realised that real change does not begin with students. It begins with us.
The hardest part is not redesigning lessons.
The hardest part is questioning the things we ourselves have accepted and normalised for years.
That kind of reflection takes courage.
Teachers today are constantly balancing curriculum expectations, emotional labour, documentation, parent expectations, assessments, behaviour, and the invisible pressure to always keep up.
And somewhere between all of this, many educators quietly lose touch with the instinct that brought them into teaching in the first place.
The instinct to truly notice children.
And yet, in that room, I saw educators reconnect with that instinct again.
I saw reflection.
I saw openness.

And most importantly, I saw possibility.

In spaces of education, leadership and caregiving, compassion is celebrated so much that we rarely pause to ask what happens when empathy begins to overflow its own boundaries. When support slowly becomes emotional absorption. When caring quietly becomes carrying !!

Writing this article was deeply personal and reflective for me. It brought language to conversations. It made me pause and think about the spaces between empathy and over-identification.

As educators and leaders, we often focus on how to give more. But perhaps sustainability begins when we also learn how to witness, regulate and hold compassion without losing ourselves within it. And so the Bhagavad Geeta says-

योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय ।
“Established in inner balance, perform your actions, abandoning attachment.”

I recently facilitated an online workshop with educators at Greenwood International School, Qatar on creative and Critical thinking.

We began with a question:
What kind of thinkers do our children need to become for the future?
And then it deepened..
Not what should children learn?
But who are they becoming in a changing world?

From there, we moved into practice:
-Starting from children’s natural ideas and interests
-Making thinking consistent, not occasional
-Designing learning where thinking is intrinsic, not imposed

We explored simple, practical ways to:

– deepen inquiry
– bring together creative and critical thinking

As I engaged with educators around the essence of the PYP framework and inquiry-based learning, I was reminded that teaching, at its truest form, is a practice of presence, a commitment to nurturing not just minds, but consciousness.

In those moments of dialogue, reflection, and shared inquiry, I witnessed, along with teachers, classrooms not as spaces of instruction, but as living ecosystems of agency, where voice, choice, and ownership were not just spoken about, but felt. Where learning was not delivered, but constructed. Where meaning was not given, but discovered, we explored the depth of trans disciplinary learning, the power of conceptual understanding, and the teacher’s role as a facilitator, gently guiding learners towards becoming thinkers, communicators, and reflective individuals.

What stayed with me most was the openness of the educators. Their willingness to unlearn, to question, and to step into the discomfort that true inquiry often brings. That is where authentic learning lives.

I return with a full heart, grateful for the connections, the conversations, and the shared commitment to reimagining education. My sincere gratitude to the Aditya Birla Education Academy for the opportunity and support in making this experience possible.

Because when teaching moves beyond content and enters the realm of purpose…
